Advertisement and letter concerning a missing Thomas Jefferson letter [manuscript], 1959.

The collection contains an advertisement in the New York Times, 1959 December 15, placed by B. Altman & Co., reading "Thomas Jefferson. Holograph letter signed, February 22, 1748 [sic]. Handsomely framed with engraved portrait. [$]225.00. The clipping was included with a letter from Julian Boyd, editor of The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, to Francis L. Berkeley, Jr., University of Virginia Library, 1959 December 29. Boyd suspects that the letter is the "missing Dulany item," and reports that B. Altman had already sold it to an unknown purchaser but that he is trying to get a copy of the negative used to make the advertisement. Boyd humorously concludes that he has notified Lyman [Butterfield] that, elsewhere in the advertisement, "Altman considers an autograph by Chester A. Arthur worth exactly what a John Qunicy Adams is worth."
